Maureen Stathis

As a lifelong artist, I have worked as an illustrator, designer, and more recently returned to Nazareth College to complete my Masters in Creative Arts Therapy. Having experienced a lifetime of “working” in a variety of art capacities has brought me to more fully appreciate the importance and necessity of creating art for my own sense of well-being. I discovered silk painting 15 years ago when presented with a unique design challenge. Since then, I have been hooked on the beauty of the ancient art form and have worked to perfect my skills. Its boundless versatility has given me opportunities to utilize the medium for utilitarian, aesthetic, and therapeutic applications. The serti-technique involves drawing on stretched silk, then applying a “resist” over the lines, followed by painting certain areas and allowing the color to spontaneously flow inside the boundary. Working with silk reflects my love of vibrant color and a shift to engage in a freer approach. In the truest sense of the phrase “art imitates life”, I both appreciate and struggle with the paradox between control and “going with the flow”.
