Jeanne Beck: current work

Jeanne Raffer Beck
Rochester, NY

Guild Meeting March 14th
"Creating"

a presentation about the evolution of her work and the inspiration of "human marks".

Artists’ Statement: After spending over two decades working as a professional writer, my past 15 years learning to express my ideas visually have led me to consider marks and handwriting as imagery.

As a way of examining the visual nature of written words, I have researched ancient scripts and Asian calligraphy. While not always decipherable to someone from another time and culture, they can be appreciated for the beauty of their forms.

In addition, the discovery of historic journals, diaries and leters has informed my work. Whatever the content may be, fascinating correspondences or mundane business transactions, the handwriting and letterforms are unique to each individual author.

My works combine fragments of found records of historic letters, diaries and journals with invented letterforms inspired by ancient texts. This juxtaposition ivites a consideration of human cultures over time. Like excavating an archeological site, the fragments do not always fit together but suggest a universality of human experience that connects us.

Guild Meeting April 11
"The Business of Craft & Trunkshow"

Andrea Geer has her studio in the Hungerford Building in Rochester.  She creates knit fashions that are unique wearable art.  Using yarns made from merino wool, linen and cotton she designs pieces that move, flow and change with the wearer.  An accomplished artist who sells at multiple shows, she will talk about how she grew her business.  She’ll finish with a trunk show of some of her designs.

This meeting also hosts our annual "Just the Ticket Auction".  Donated items by members are displayed for ticket bids.  At the end of the meeting, a winning ticket for each item will be picked. Members are encouraged to participate, as all proceeds benefit our Programs.

Guild Meeting May 9
"Chromatic Fantasy"

Whether it is in her striking doubleweave wallpieces or elegant wearables, Jennifer Moore is widely known for her luminous color gradations and distinctive designs that are at once both balanced and dynamic.
Jennifer wrote the book (literally) on Doubleweave, and for over 25 years has been exploring relationships between weaving, mathematics and music in her doubleweave wall pieces. Jennifer will show how she has used doubleweave pick-up as a medium for her geometric designs and color harmonies. She will explain the basic principles of the golden proportion, symmetry movements, tessellations and fractals, and show how she has used them in her work. The program will culminate with an animated video of her weavings dancing to the music of Bach. (Courtesy of the Weavers Guild of Boston website)

Guild Workshop May 7-9
"Doubleweave: Beyond the Basics"

This two and a half day workshop will focus on double weave for those who have some experience with the weave structure.  Registration forms for members are available in the YARN.  It will be a round robin workshop exploring what can be done with multiple layers of cloth on a multi-shaft loom. Samples will be woven as participants study the theory behind a variety of structures including 4-layer weaves, double-width twill cloth, multi-layer color blending, stitched cloth, doubleweave checkerboards and windows, and doubleweave twill and block pick-up.

Annual Meeting
June 13th

The Guild's annual meeting and Picnic will be held at the Carmen Clark Lodge, 777 Westfall Rd. in Brighton. [it is the same location as our Holiday Sale].  All committee reports are due, brief summary reports will be given and our budget approved.  There is a social potluck picnic following the business meeting.  Before and after the meeting is our New to You Sale, the only time that members can sell personal goods------your cast off may just be someone else's treasure.

Barbara Wainright
Rochester, NY

Guild Meeting January 11
"Shaft Multiplication: Weaving with a Drawloom"

Four blocks of twill with only eight shafts?  This and so much more is possible when using a drawloom.  With photos and woven examples, Barb will show us how a drawloom works, what it makes possible, and how the two major types of drawlooms differ from each other and from jacquard.

Guild member Barb Wainright, who studied drawloom weaving and its cousins with Becky Ashenden, will also demonstrate sword damask.  This closely related shaft-multiplication technique is one that may be possible on your current loom.

Sarah Fortin
Laconia, New Hampshire

 Guild Meeting October 12, 2011
"Shadow Weave in Polychrome"

Shadow weave is a visually graphic and exciting weave structure, but may also be a stable, yet fluid fabric. Sarah in her talk will explore the many possibilities for creating beautiful cloth when using more than two colors or textures while weaving the shadow weave structure. Slides and samples will be shown to illustrate the use of the Powell method of shadow weave and the many variations created by the use of several colors, and changes of treadling sequences, with each draft. The handout available for purchase contains copies of each draft that is shown.

Note: the image is of a doubleweave cloth by Sarah.
